The World's Longest Straight Roads


Few roads around the world are actually arrow straight and there is a good reason for this. Straight roads are boring, boredom brings about tiredness and tiredness on the road kills. Having said that though, there are several long straight roads around the world, most of which can be found in the U.S.A and Canada, probably due to the fact that these countries are huge and that their towns are few and far between, but even these roads will have wide sweeping curves, the odd kink or two or an undulating surface.

The majority of people who enjoy long, straight roads are those who wish to put their foot down and experience the thrill of high speed, but the following straight roads are all located in countries with strict speed limits which must be adhered to.


The Rub al Khali, Saudi Arabia


Officially the world's longest straight road is Highway 85 located between the towns of Haradh and Badha in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This predominantly desert highway measures 260 kilometers in length and begins at the site of the world’s largest oil field, the Ghawar Field of Eastern Province and terminates at the bordertown of Badha located in the lush oasis area of Al Ahsa on the kingdom’s border with the United Arab Emirates. The road makes it’s way through part of the Rub al Khali, the world’s largest sand desert, also known as the Dead Quarter.
The speed limit in Saudi Arabia is between 80 and 120 kilometers an hour and don’t forget that it is illegal for women to drive there.


The U.S.A's 198 kilometer long, Highway 46, is located in the state of North Dakota. The road, which is classified as the U.S.A's longest, strait road, is located between the towns of Streeter in Stutsman County and Oxbow in Cass County in the south east of the state. The road travels through the flat, green prairie land of the Red River Valley.
The speed limit in North Dakota is 70 miles an hour.


Australia's longest straight road is a 146 kilometer long stretch of the Eyre Highway known as the Ninety Mile Strait, located between the tiny settlements of Caiguna and Balladonia in Western Australia. The road travels through part of the vast treeless expanse of the Nullarbor Plain and the granite outcrops known as the Fraser Range.
The speed limit in Western Australia is between 60 and 90 kilometers an hour unless signposted to the contrary.


Canada's longest strait road is the 140 kilometer long, SK33, a regional highway located in the province of Saskatchewan. The road is located between the provincial capital city of Regina and the small town of Stoughton. The road travels through a large swathe of the lush green grasslands of the vast Sasketchewan Prairie.
The speed limit in Saskatchewan is 80 kilometers an hour unless signposted to the contrary.


Tram Road is a fifty kilometer long road located between the historic town of Oxford and the city of Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island. The road consists of a 38 kilometer long stretch which runs through the picturesque Canterbury Plains located in the foothills of the Southern Alps and is officially New Zealand’s longest straight road.
The speed limit in New Zealand is 100 kilometers an hour.


England’s A15 is a 40 kilometer long road located between Junction 4 on the M180 and the city of Lincoln in Lincolnshire. Travelling in a straight line through the flat arable land of eastern England, the A15 has been designated as the United Kingdom’s longest straight road.
The speed limit on A roads in the United Kingdom is 70 miles an hour.
